Engine rebuild cost

A full engine rebuild typically costs $2,500 to $4,000, depending on the vehicle and how badly the engine is damaged. The shop takes your engine apart, machines or replaces worn parts and reassembles it.

Most engine rebuilds cost $2,500 to $4,000. Large V8 or diesel engines, or engines with a cracked block or damaged crankshaft, can cost more.

A rebuild keeps your original engine, which matters for classic or matching-numbers cars and for engines that are hard to find used. A used engine can be cheaper but comes with an unknown history.

What a rebuild includes

Typical rebuilds replace the piston rings, bearings, gaskets and seals, the oil pump and the timing components, and machine the cylinders and crankshaft as needed. Ask for a written list of what is replaced and the warranty in miles and months.

What changes the price

  • Damage. A spun bearing or scored cylinder needs machine work; a cracked block may make a rebuild impractical.
  • Engine type. V8, diesel and overhead-cam engines with more parts cost more to rebuild.
  • Where you go. Dealers often charge 25% or more above independent shops. Most shops bill about $120 to $159 an hour (AAA, citing a 2025 PartsTech survey).
  • The parts. OEM (factory) parts cost more than aftermarket or remanufactured parts. Ask which ones the estimate uses and what warranty comes with them.

How to get a fair estimate

  • Ask for a written estimate that lists parts, labor hours and the shop’s hourly rate before any work starts.
  • Ask whether the quote uses OEM, aftermarket or remanufactured parts, and what warranty comes with the parts and the labor.
  • Get a second quote for any repair over a few hundred dollars. Independent shops often charge less per hour than dealers.
  • Ask the shop to show you the old part or the reading that proves it failed, and to call you before doing extra work.
  • Check for recalls and warranty coverage first: many powertrain, emissions and hybrid parts carry longer factory warranties.
