Get a quick, realistic price range for a common car repair, adjusted for the kind of vehicle you drive, the shop you use and labor costs where you live.
Starts from national average parts and labor estimates (RepairPal, September 2026), then applies our rough adjustments for vehicle type, dealer labor and local labor rates. A planning estimate, not a quote.
How the estimator works
Starting point: national average parts and labor estimates for each repair, from RepairPal (September 2026) and the other sources cited in each guide.
Vehicle: we raise or lower parts and labor with simple multipliers for economy cars, trucks and luxury or European models. These are our rough adjustments, not published figures.
Dealer: labor is raised 25%, because AAA notes dealers often charge 25% or more above independent shops.
Local labor costs: labor is adjusted for lower- and higher-cost areas; most shops charge about $120 to $159 an hour.
This is a planning estimate, not a quote. Ask the shop for a written estimate with parts, labor hours and the hourly rate, and compare it with the range here.
