Is it worth fixing my car?

Facing a big repair bill on an older car? Compare the repair with what the car is worth and what a replacement would cost each month.

–

Rule of thumb: when repairs in the next year cost more than about half of the car's value, replacing it often makes more sense. Safety, reliability and how long you plan to keep the car matter too.

    How to decide

    • Under 30% of the car's value: repairing is almost always cheaper than replacing.
    • 30% to 50%: usually worth it if the car is otherwise reliable, rust-free and paid off.
    • 50% to 75%: compare the repair with several months of car payments, insurance and taxes on a replacement.
    • Over 75%: unless the car has special value to you, replacing it is often the better deal.

    Before you decide

    • Get a second estimate for any repair over $1,000.
    • Ask about used or remanufactured parts, which can cut the bill.
    • Check for recalls and extended warranties on your VIN.
    • Look up your car's value in good condition, and what it would sell for as-is.
