Mechanic labor rates per hour
Most independent auto repair shops charge $100 to $159 per hour for labor, and dealers often charge 25% or more above that. Shops usually bill from a labor guide that sets a standard number of hours for each job, not the time the mechanic actually spends.

How labor time is billed
Most shops use a labor guide ("book time") for each job. If the guide says an alternator takes 1.8 hours and the rate is $140, the labor charge is about $252 whether the mechanic finishes faster or slower. Diagnostic time is often billed separately.
How to check a labor charge
- Ask for the hourly rate and the number of labor hours on the written estimate.
- Compare the hours with a second shop's estimate for the same job.
- Ask whether overlapping labor is discounted when two jobs share the same disassembly.
How to get a fair estimate
- Ask for a written estimate that lists parts, labor hours and the shop’s hourly rate before any work starts.
- Ask whether the quote uses OEM, aftermarket or remanufactured parts, and what warranty comes with the parts and the labor.
- Get a second quote for any repair over a few hundred dollars. Independent shops often charge less per hour than dealers.
- Ask the shop to show you the old part or the reading that proves it failed, and to call you before doing extra work.
- Check for recalls and warranty coverage first: many powertrain, emissions and hybrid parts carry longer factory warranties.
