A rebuild replaces the clutches, bands, seals, gaskets and other wear parts inside your transmission and keeps the case and hard parts that are still good. Hard parts such as a damaged valve body or torque converter add to the bill.
Ask about the warranty
Rebuild warranties vary a lot, from 12 months to three years or more. A nationwide warranty matters if you travel. Get the terms, mileage limit and what voids it in writing.
What changes the price
- Number of gears and electronics. More gears and integrated control modules mean more parts and programming.
- How much is damaged. Metal debris can mean a new torque converter, cooler flush or valve body.
- Where you go. Dealers often charge 25% or more above independent shops. Most shops bill about $120 to $159 an hour (AAA, citing a 2025 PartsTech survey).
How to get a fair estimate
- Ask for a written estimate that lists parts, labor hours and the shop’s hourly rate before any work starts.
- Ask whether the quote uses OEM, aftermarket or remanufactured parts, and what warranty comes with the parts and the labor.
- Get a second quote for any repair over a few hundred dollars. Independent shops often charge less per hour than dealers.
- Ask the shop to show you the old part or the reading that proves it failed, and to call you before doing extra work.
- Check for recalls and warranty coverage first: many powertrain, emissions and hybrid parts carry longer factory warranties.
Frequently asked questions
Is it cheaper to rebuild or replace a transmission?
For many older four-speed automatics, a rebuild is cheaper. For complex modern transmissions, a remanufactured replacement can cost about the same and often has a better warranty.
How long does a transmission rebuild take?
Usually three to five days, depending on parts.
