EV battery replacement cost
Replacing an electric vehicle's battery pack costs $5,000 to $20,000 or more, according to AAA. Pack size drives the price, and most EV batteries are covered by an 8- to 10-year, 100,000-mile warranty, so few owners pay this in the car's early years.

Labor at EV-certified shops runs about $175 to $250+ an hour, or $1,000 to $3,000+ per job. Remanufactured packs cost 30% to 50% less than new OEM packs.
Check your battery warranty
Most EV batteries are covered for 8 to 10 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first, against defects and excessive capacity loss (for example, dropping below about 70% of original capacity). Check your warranty booklet before paying for a pack.
Repair instead of replace
Some packs can be repaired by replacing individual modules, which can cost much less than a full pack. Ask an EV specialist whether module replacement is possible for your car.
How to get a fair estimate
- Ask for a written estimate that lists parts, labor hours and the shop’s hourly rate before any work starts.
- Ask whether the quote uses OEM, aftermarket or remanufactured parts, and what warranty comes with the parts and the labor.
- Get a second quote for any repair over a few hundred dollars. Independent shops often charge less per hour than dealers.
- Ask the shop to show you the old part or the reading that proves it failed, and to call you before doing extra work.
- Check for recalls and warranty coverage first: many powertrain, emissions and hybrid parts carry longer factory warranties.
Frequently asked questions
How long do EV batteries last?
Most are designed to last well beyond their 8- to 10-year warranty with gradual capacity loss.
Is it worth replacing an EV battery?
On a newer EV it often is, especially with a remanufactured pack. On an older, low-value EV, the pack can cost more than the car is worth.
